A superb performance from the Rovers, which made the trip to Southend worth while as the Rovers played brilliantly to beat Division 3 side Southend. The Rovers started brightly with Tommy Wright creating chances. Ian Duerden had a effort saved before after a Rovers break, Dave Penney drove home what proved to be the winner on 12 minutes. The Rovers following went wild and there was a great atmosphere in the away end. Southend got into the game a little more and they struck the bar in the first half as both side made some more attacks. Half time arrived and the Rovers went in to a great cheer form the away fans. In the second half both sides had some openings. The Rovers hit the bar, and worked some good openings. Southend started to press and it looked like they had equalised but the ball was cleared much to the relief of the Rovers faithful. Hume went on and it looked like Southend were going to score at the end on stoppage time but the ball thankfully missed the target. As the final whistle went Rovers fans, and players alike, went wild, with the Rovers players saluting the Rovers fans. A fantastic result, we now face Rushden in the second round.
